If the haunting theme song of “Tehran” doesn’t grab you, every phenomenal episode of Season 2 (Apple TV) will.
Mossad agent extraordinaire Tamar (Niv Sultan) is back, unwillingly at first, as she is given the chance to leave the service and flee to Canada with her Iranian dissident boyfriend Milad (Shervin Alenabi). But duty calls, and she’s given one last and near-impossible assignment: to assassinate the evil Qassem Mohammedi (Vassilis Koukalani), head of the Revolutionary Guards.
Obstacles stand in her way, however—the chief among them being Faraz (Shaun Toub), the Iranian inspector who plays Javert to Tamar’s Jean Valjean. Other major players complicating matters include studly privileged young Persians vying for Tamar’s affections, including Vahid (Sia Alapour) a muscle-bound drug dealer and health club owner, and Payman (Darius Homayoun), Mohammedi’s son who’s just returned from three years in Los Angeles and is reluctant to follow in his father’s footsteps.
One of the oddest (but ultimately brilliant) casting choices was to have Glenn Close play a British psychiatrist doubling as a local Mossad agent. In addition to micromanaging Tamar’s every move, she treats Nahid, Faraz’s wife (Sheila Fosough) who suffers from anxiety attacks.
Season 2’s explosive finale will not be revealed here, nor will details of the nail-biting episodes that often end in cliffhangers. Just tune in and let the binge-watching begin. And if you find yourself humming the haunting signature tune (thank you, Mark Eliyahu), it is entirely okay to download it as your ring tone.
It’s a great show. I was surprised to see Glen Close in it but she brings another dimension and twist.
