Dance: “Cao Sem Plumas” at the Joyce (2019)
When David Byrne needed creative inspiration 30 years ago, he turned to Brazil. When American choreographer Deborah Kolker wanted the same, she needed look no further than Cafi, her Brazilian director husband, and his remote, third-world village of Pernambuco.
Her “Cao Sem Plumas” (Dogs without Feathers”) piece at the Joyce is nothing short of a multimedia masterpiece—production values are pure “Hamilton” with a side order of Pilobolus. It’s a sexy, steamy tilt-o-whirl of half-naked, muscular mud-caked dancers; rear-screen projection of luscious black-and-white film shot by Cafi; and a throbbing, sensuous, percussion-heavy score from composer Jorge Du Peixe.
Major props to the powers-that-be at the Joyce for bringing this work to 212. Tickets available through Sunday. Good luck getting them. (Friday)
