Dance: “Carmen” @ the Joyce
Who doesn’t love “Carmen.” (We’ve seen the opera at least three times.) But what’s Bizet’s masterpiece without its sopranos, tenors, and fabulous libretto? An exuberant performance by the Compania National de Danza at the Joyce, that’s what.
Swedish-born Johan Inger has taken the story of the gypsy factory girl and her romance with Don Jose, and built an explosive night of dance theater, set to Bizet’s score. From the first ensemble piece of pretty senoritas partnering with handsome soldiers, you’re hooked. As for the stars, Carmen (played by Sara Fernandez in Thursday night’s performance ) whirls, glides, and flirts lustily with all the men—especially Don Zuniga (Benjamin Poirer), Don Escamillo the matador (Alessandro Rigo) and of course her main squeeze Don Jose (Jon Vallejo), driving him mad with jealousy.
The second act takes on a more serious, psychological tone with the troop dressed as “shadows,” pursuing Don Jose for his crime of passion. Vallejo’s every-man looks (no pretty boy, he) makes his pursuit of Carmen and regret over his actions believable. He
is superb to behold.
How fortunate to catch this classic brought to life in yet another form! Well, Easter’s traditionally been a time for rebirth so def go. Happy Jelly Beans, peeps.
