Dance @ the Joyce - It Starts Now: Alejandro Cerrudo
You could hear the rousing five-minute standing ovation at the Joyce Theater from miles away tonight. It was also a sigh of relief from dance aficionados starved for great performances not confined to a teeny-tiny Zoom screen.
With Choreographer Alejandro Cerrudo at the helm, the night was no less than spectacular. Quietly spectacular, we must emphasize. This Madrid-born veteran of Hubbard Street and NDT has spun a seamless 65-minute suite of small pieces (duration of about 5 minutes each), scored to music from the Kronos Quartet, Charlie Chaplin, and Gustavo Santaolla (“Brokeback Mountain”) among others.
The star of this multinational troupe has to be boy wonder Daniel Rae Srivasta. With streaky tats running down his torso, his moves are better than Jagger’s. IMHO, this Austin-born Apollo is young Edward Villella all over again.
Yes, terpsichoreans, rejoice! Dance is back at Eighth and West 19th, and happy to report, the Joyce haven’t missed a step. Hie thee there with all dispatch; if you can’t make the Cerrudo performance, they’ve got plenty more in their dance bag this season.
