Film: “Crazy Rich Asians” (review from 2017)
Soon, summer will be over. Weekends at the beach, poof! Long bike rides on the weekend, buh-bye. Shorts, bare limbs, walks in the park, done de done done. And you will kick yourself for having missed the last guilty pleasure of the summer of 2018: the fantastic, hilarious, over-the-top “Crazy Rich Asians.”
The film is the Asian take on the Meghan Markle-meets-Prince Harry tale: a young beautiful Chinese-American econ prof (Constance Wu) at NYU meets handsome, Singapore-born scion of a rich real estate family (Henry Golding)—only she doesn’t find out how rich he is until she gets invited back to a lavish family wedding. They meet an all-Asian cast of characters and cousins that are a cross between “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” “Sabrina,” and “Meet the Parents.” With Michelle Yeoh as the chilly matriarch who disapproves of the relationship.
Directed by Jon Chu, the film is as corny as Kansas in autumn and predictable as monsoon season in Burma, but a lovable guilty pleasure nonetheless. Props to G, who insisted Mr. Snob Elitist go. Glad he did. Your turn, AugNation. (Wednesday)
