“You” (Netflix) isn’t about you or me. It’s about him—Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgely). The mild-mannered manager of an Upper East Side bookshop, he’ll do anything for those he cares about. Whether it be Paco (Luca Padovan), the young son of his troubled single-mother neighbor (Victoria Cartagena), or the various women who stumble into his life.
Which lucky lady will he serve as knight in shining armor to? Why, Lady Guinevere of course—aka Guinevere Beck (Elizabeth Lail). A ringer for Cybill Shepherd with the slightly goofy, sexy demeanor of Jessica Lange, she’s an MFA student who happens to visit the bookshop someday and who Joe soon becomes obsessed with.
Typical rom-com material? Hardly. Joe begins stalking Beck until she notices him and they eventually become a thing. There are complications, however; she’s already got a druggie bad-boy BF (Lou Taylor Pucci) and a rich-bitch BFF (Shay Mitchell) who are getting in the way of Joe and Beck’s happily ever after.
Season 1 of “You” follows Joe and Beck’s on-again-off-again romance and the creepy extent to which the increasingly obsessed Joe will go to get what he wants. We can’t wait for Seasons 2 and 3.
Meanwhile if you haven’t done so already, work your way through Season 1 of this thriller. You’ll never look at a first edition of “Wuthering Heights” again.
Been meaning to watch this! Now I will. Thanks old friend.
