Theater: “Merrily We Roll Along” (2019 production)
(not the current production)
Excellent production of “Merrily We Roll Along,” the 1981 Sondheim musical that flopped after 16 performances back then but has become a cult favorite among Sondheim-ites ever since.
For those of us who remember, much of the novelty came from the book which moved backwards in time. From 1981 when the three show biz leads were rivals and enemies, all the way back to 1957 when they were young idealists and best of friends.
Full disclosure: this is not my favorite Sondheim musical and the reverse sequencing gets old fast. With Ben Steinfeld, Jesse Austrian and Manu Narayan as the leads. At Laura Pels. (Thursday)
