In Uganda, homosexuality has been illegal since British rule. But homophobia reached a peak of sorts in 2010, when a newspaper, the Rolling Stone, started printing names and addresses of those suspected of being gay.
In “Rolling Stone,” Chris Urch’s West End import at Lincoln Center, young Dembe (Ato Blankson-Wood) fears being outed for his relationship with an Irish doctor (Robert Gilbert) who’s working for a local hospital. Especially since Dembe’s homophobic brother (James Udom from CSC’s “Miss Julie”) is the village preacher.
Just when you think bigotry is a thing of the past, you see a play like this and get depressed all over again. Even though it’s happening 10,000 miles away. Every day. Well-acted and absolutely terrifying.
