Theater: “Superhero” with Bryce Pinkham @ 2st (2018)
Bryce Pinkham, dayum! He’s hunkier than Hugh Jackman, sings like a dream, and is funnier than me (on a good night). In short, he’s a superhero. And he’s the best reason to see “Superhero,” the sweet but seriously mediocre new musical at Second Stage about the mild-mannered bus driver in 4B, who may (or may not) have a secret identity. (No spoilers here.)
Young Kyle McArthur plays the downstairs comic book junkie who smells a rat, and the great Kate Baldwin (Finian’s Rainbow) plays the kid’s widowed mother who will settle for human companionship, let alone that of a Superman.
Book by John Logan (“Red”), music and lyrics by Tom Kitt (“Next to Normal,” which I liked much better). The one to watch is Salena Quereshi, who plays the kid’s heartbreaker GF. Should they ever make a musical about AOC (and they will), she will get the role. You heard it here first. Rated M for “meh.” Go see “Choir Boy” instead. (Thursday)
